They are an AI program, and used to assist in hacking. They're specialized in what they do, but they do it reliably.

There are several different kinds of hacking programs, and they all look different.

Something along those lines. Usually these programs start out with limited functionality. With effort a hacker will be able to raise both their own and their program's power, allowing them both to do more.
